Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully before using mahj.events.

Effective date: March 30, 2026

1. Agreement to terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a legally binding agreement between you and mahj.events (“we,” “us,” or “our”), a DBA operated out of Austin, Texas. By accessing or using the website at mahj.events, the application at app.mahj.events, or any related services (together, the “Service”), you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are between 13 and 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction), you may only use the Service with the consent of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to be bound by these Terms. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.

3. Accounts

To access certain features you must create an account. When you do, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information and keep it up to date.
  • Keep your login credentials confidential and not share them with others.
  • Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account.
  • Notify us promptly at hello@mahj.events if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. The Service

mahj.events is an event-management platform built for American Mahjong. The Service allows you to create and join games, manage player groups, track winning hands, and — for hosts and instructors — organize lesson series and collect payments from players. Features may change over time as we add, modify, or retire functionality.

5. Free & paid plans

The Service offers a free tier and one or more paid plans. For paid plans:

  • Pricing and feature availability are described on our Pricing page and may change with reasonable notice.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing, you also agree to Stripe’s terms.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel before the renewal date.
  • We may offer free trials or promotional pricing at our discretion. Unless canceled before the trial ends, your payment method will be charged the standard rate.

6. Payments between users (Stripe Connect)

The Service enables hosts and instructors to collect payments from players through Stripe Connect. By using this feature:

  • Hosts & instructorsagree to Stripe’s Connected Account Agreement and are responsible for the accuracy of the amounts they charge and any applicable tax obligations.
  • Playersacknowledge that payments are made to the host or instructor, not to mahj.events. We facilitate the transaction but are not a party to the arrangement between you and the host / instructor.
  • Refund and cancellation policies for games and lessons are set by the host or instructor. We encourage hosts to communicate these policies clearly to players before payment.

mahj.events is not responsible for disputes between hosts and players. If you are unable to resolve a payment dispute directly, you may contact us and we will make reasonable efforts to help.

7. User content

You retain ownership of any content you submit to the Service (such as group names, game descriptions, and profile information). By submitting content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, display, and store that content solely as necessary to provide and improve the Service.

You are responsible for the content you submit and agree not to post anything that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable.

8. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any purpose that is illegal or prohibited by these Terms.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service, servers, or networks connected to the Service.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service or another user’s account.
  • Scrape, crawl, or use automated means to access the Service without our written permission.
  • Use the Service to send unsolicited communications (spam).
  • Impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your affiliation.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these rules.

9. Intellectual property

The Service — including its design, code, graphics, logos, and content (excluding user content) — is owned by mahj.events and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from any part of the Service without our prior written consent. References to the NMJL (National Mah Jongg League) and its card are used for descriptive purposes only and do not imply endorsement or affiliation.

10. Third-party services

The Service may contain links to or integrate with third-party websites and services (e.g., Stripe, Supabase). We are not responsible for the content, privacy practices, or terms of any third-party service. Your use of third-party services is at your own risk and subject to their respective terms and policies.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if:

  • You breach these Terms.
  • We are required to do so by law.
  • We discontinue the Service or a material part of it (with reasonable notice where practicable).

Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Sections that by their nature should survive (including Sections 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, and 15) will survive termination.

12. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE. YOU USE THE SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

13. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, MAHJ.EVENTS AND ITS OWNERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100).

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless mahj.events and its owners, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or related to your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.

15. Governing law & disputes

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service shall be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Travis County, Texas, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

16. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email or through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you should stop using the Service.

17. General

  • Entire agreement — these Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and mahj.events regarding the Service.
  • Severability — if any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
  • Waiver — our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.
  • Assignment — you may not assign your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We may assign our rights without restriction.
